In Maths we are going to be focusing on a number a week, which allows us to really get to know each number! During our first weeks in school, we have been doing different sorting activities to make our brains start to think in a mathematical way and we are starting to notice patterns.

We have been exploring Florence Nightingale and her influence on nursing. We looked at the nurses unirforms that they wore in the 1800’s compared to the uniforms nurses wear today. We then worked in groups to design and create a nurses uniform that could be worn by a future nurse.

This week we have been focusing on place value. We partitioned numbers using the base ten models which helped us to show how many tens and ones are in two digit numbers.

We used dictionaries to look up words we didn’t know the meaning of from the story ‘Giraffes Can’t Dance’.

We had to look carefully at the letter the word began with, find this in the order of the alphabet then find it in the dictionary.

The more we practised the quicker we were at finding the definitions.

Whilst exploring the significance of Florence Nightingale, we experimented using modern day hospital equipment and compared this to the equipment they would have had during the 1800’s. We used bandages, rubber gloves, safety goggles and even listened to each others heart beat using a stethescope!

We have been researching why Florence Nightingale was known as the ‘Lady of the Lamp’. We found that when she went to check on the patients during the night in the war she carried a lamp to be able to see.
