Catholic Life of the School

Our Lady’s School is a Voluntary Aided Catholic School established to support Catholic parents in their responsibility for the spiritual, academic, physical, moral, cultural and religious development of their children in accordance with the teachings of the Church.

Religious Education at Our Lady’s School is underpinned by the following aims from Salford Diocese:

1. To present engagingly a comprehensive content which is the basis of knowledge and understanding of the Catholic faith;

2. To enable pupils continually to deepen their religious and theological understanding and be able to communicate this effectively;

3. To present an authentic vision of the Church's moral and social teaching so that pupils can make a critique of the underlying trends in contemporary culture and society;

4. To raise pupils' awareness of the faith and traditions of other religious communities in order to respect and understand them;

5. To develop the critical faculties of pupils so that they can relate their Catholic faith to daily life;

6. To stimulate pupils' imagination and provoke a desire for personal meaning as revealed in the truth of the Catholic faith;

7. To enable pupils to relate the knowledge gained through Religious Education to their understanding of other subjects in the curriculum;

8. To bring clarity to the relationship between faith and life, and between faith and culture.

We offer pupils the experience to grow and develop in a loving community into mature Christians who live for the Father, in accordance with the teachings of Jesus Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit within the Sacraments of the Church.   Both through Religious Education and in the general life of the school, pupils are prepared to witness to moral and spiritual values in the wider world. Religious education is the “core of the core curriculum” in our Catholic school. Our mission ‘Learning and loving together, we grow with Jesus’ helps develop the whole child as an individual.

Our Mission Statement
"learning and loving together;
we grow with Jesus"

During September 2023 workshops with both staff and pupils, we revisited our Mission Statement and Core Values. This involved everyone in discussion, reflection and prayer about the values, Mission and Aims of our Catholic school. There was a calling to all to re-commit to our purpose and to work together to understand our roles and responsibilities as part of Our Lady’s.

Our Mission is represented by this design. As with the statement itself, the logo was developed by all stakeholders, with the children in particular providing the symbolic ideas of growth – the tree, love – the hearts and Christ – the Cross.

Our Core Values

The Core Values that provide the foundation for that Mission are:

Loving   Positive     Safe

Nurturing      Forgiving      Kind

Respectful         Honest

  • Loving - ‘Love God and love people’ Matthew 22:36-40

  • Positive - ‘Rejoice always’ Thessalonians 5-16

  • Safe - ‘You can always turn to the Lord when times are tough’ Psalms 9:9-10

  • Nurturing - ‘Grow in the grace and knowledge of Saviour Jesus Christ’ 2 Peter 3-18

  • Forgive - ‘Forgive and you will be forgiven’ Luke 6:37

  • Kind - ‘Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord’ Proverbs’ 19:17

  • Respectful - ‘Lord, your God shall you worship and him alone shall you serve’ Matthew 4:1-11

  • Honest - ‘I am the way, the truth, the life’ John 14:6

All classes have been allocated a particular value, so that as they journey through Our Lady’s, we can encourage children to gain a rich, deeper understanding of those values and how to live them out within the context of their own lives.

Nurture

The School's six nurturing principles sum up our practice and theory. They underpin the context, organisation and curriculum.

  1. Children's learning is understood developmentally

  2. The classroom offers a safe base

  3. the importance of nurture for the development of wellbeing

  4. Language as a vital means of communication

  5. All behaviour is communication

  6. The importance of transition in children's lives

Bronze: Rights Committed Award

We have recently been awarded with our UNICEF Bronze: Rights Committed Award. This is an award that accredits the hard work Our Lady's already does to celebrate the rights of young children.

Children will learn in 3 strands:

Strand A: Teaching and Learning ABOUT rights

Strand B: Teaching and Learning THROUGH rights

Strand C: Being ambassadors FOR the rights of others

As we work towards the Silver Award, we will continue to work in further detail on our young people becoming advocates for changes and illustrating their rights. This is taken from the CRC (Convention on the Rights of the Child which was adopted on November 20th (World Children's Day).
