In science, we have been learning about how to seperate different mixtures. We carried out two investigations that involved filtering and evaporation. We found that the mud clung to the filter paper and separated from the water, allowing the water to become clear. We also found that the water separated from the salt through evaporation and only the salt remained in the evaporation dish.

This week Year 1 have loved pumpkin picking at Kenyon Hall farm! We also were super proud of the whole class on their achievement performing their assembly on Tuesday. Year 1 have been busy this week learning about shapes. We cut out shapes and made pictures in Art and sorted shapes in Maths. This week Year 1 enjoyed playing sound bingo to practice reading the ay sound in lots of different ways. In science, we made our own perfume from flowers. Children enjoyed using the pipettes carefully to transfer the water. Key vocabulary: flower, petal, stem, observe Key sound: consolidate ai, ay, a-e and ea.

This week, in Science we have been testing materials to see which was the best thermal insulator. We used water at 65 °C checking the temperature at the beginning of the investigation. We then wrapped cloth, paper and tinfoil around the cups to see which was the best insulator. After 15 minutes, we tested the water temperature and recorded our results.

Year 1 have loved working with Belinda our school artist. We explored the work of Paul Klee and tried to draw shapes inspired by him with chalk. Our nature walk for science allowed us to discover lots of different leaves! We painted some of the beautiful things that we found, remembering that God created these for us. This week in science, we have been exploring different materials. We have carried out some comparative testing. We used a variety of materials such as wood, plastic, metal and fabric. We described their properties and discussed their uses. We explored magnetism and investigated which were conductors of electricity.

Year 1 have settled in to their new classroom very well. They have been building Mr Potato Head to remind us of our rules. Year 1 have been busy exploring the different areas, starting to learn about plants and the journey of water in our outdoor area. They also had fun in Bikeability at the start of the week! Our recent science topic has been looking at the properties of rocks and what makes each rock unique. We have been placing rocks into different groups to help us understand just how different they are. Some have marbling but some don't, some rocks can break down easily but others can't. Some rocks have interesting patterns on them, but some are plain and simple.

We have started our new topic this week- Under The Sea. We started with our science topic where we investigated sinking and floating. We went outside in the outdoor area to predict whether different objects would float or sink. The children used some fantastic vocabulary to explain their reasoning such as 'dense', 'metal', 'air', 'heavy' and 'light'.

We have enjoyed identifying a variety of different plants in our local area during our Science lesson this week. We collected data using a tally chart to see which flower was the most popular. The children then compared their results. We found daisies, buttercups, dandelions, snow drops, perennials and crocuses'.
